Fossil hunting at the target range … duck and dig! February 15, 2010 (46/365)

This pile of rocks used to be a thermal vent at the bottom of an ocean covering Colorado (and other states). Now it is prime hunting grounds for baculites and other fossils. Turns out it is also part of the range for the man with the long-range rifle who lives at the top of the mesa … call first before hunting!!

Several Long-billed Thrashers live in the cactus near my parents house. They were my second choice for this photo, but they stood still longer than the damn quail I was trying to shoot (with my camera!).
